Manigault family papers, 1685-1971.

Papers consist of correspondence, estate papers, plantation journals, financial records, writings, diaries, and other items. Included are the papers of Gabriel Manigault (1758-1809), Peter Manigault (1731-1773), Charles Izard Manigault (1795-1874), and Gabriel Edward Manigault (1833-1899). Manigault family correspondence (1784-1796) concerns plantation affairs, family and social life, politics, and other matters. Correspondents include Margaret I. Manigault, Ralph Izard, and Gabriel Manigault (1758-1809). Other items include a receipt (1685) for passage money to South Carolina for the Giton family; a letter (in French, ca. 1690) of Judith Giton (later Judith Manigault) concerning her Huguenot family's voyage to South Carolina from France and their hardships; a letter (1727) to Pierre Manigault from Mr. Deliesseline; and a letter (1735) from Gabriel Manigault (1704-1781) to Nathaniel Broughton regarding the former's health. A bound volume contains "Extracts from a journal kept by Mrs. A.M., 1754-1781" transcribed and annotated by her grandson Gabriel Manigault (1758-1809); another volume was transcribed by Mabel Louise Webber. This diary contains entries concerning family matters, social life, the weather, and other topics. Bound volume (ca. 1820) contains a holograph translation by Margaret Izard Manigault of a French novel entitled "Leonia." This is a translation of "Leonie de Montbreuse" (1813) by Sophie Gay. Records (ca. 1920-1971) concerning the history, restoration, and preservation of the Joseph Manigault House of Charleston, S.C. (a National Historic Landmark) include articles, correspondence, clippings, pamphlets, photographs, and a guest register. Correspondents, mostly members of the Society for the Preservation of Old Dwellings (later the Preservation Society), include Susan Pringle Frost, Nellie (Mrs. Ernest) Pringle, Ernest H. Pringle, G. Corner Fenhagen, and others.

Margart Izard Manigault was the daughter of Ralph Izard of Charleston, S.C., and Alice de Lancey of New York.
